seahorse

an animal mask set

5 week studio project

project goal:

to create an animal mask out of one sheet of 19"x24" bristol paper. The mask much accurately represent the chosen animals prominent features and must be able to be assembled by another party through a simple instruction manual. When assembled, the mask cannot be put together with tape or glue, it can use a tab system to secure the pieces.

the seahorse…

a creature with an equal balance of being bold and shy in nature. Prone to be slow and graceful with a very gentle demeanor.

sketches

began sketching different ways I could portray the prominent features that are on a seahorse. I started by focusing on specific features then moved into studies of how the full head would look with all the features combined.

final mask design

I settled on this design because I thought it was the best representation of all the prominent features tied together. this became the final design that I used as my reference when building my seahorse mask.

prototyping process

I began the prototyping process by creating small scale models of each individual prominent feature. I then began to put the features together to start assembling a full low fidelity model of my mask.

instruction ideation

I began by exploring different ideas for a “logo” for my mask by trying to incorporate the animal into the word. after I settled on a design, I began to play with color palettes and decided to go with a cool-tone color scheme to go along with the theme of being underwater.

the next phase of this project was to create an instruction sheet on the assembly of the mask. the goal was to introduce empathy into my design by understanding how someone who knew nothing about my mask would be able to assemble it on their own.
